Mirra Alfassa was born in Paris on February 21, 1878. She was a student at the Academie Julian and became an accomplished artist, pianist, and writer. In 1905 and 1906, she traveled to Tlemen, Algeria, to study with the adept Max Theon and his wife. Her main focus, however, was spiritual growth. She founded a group of spiritual seekers in Paris and spoke to various groups.
In 1914, the Mother traveled to Pondicherry to meet Sri Aurobindo,
whom she immediatel recognized as the one whohad inwardly guided her spiritual development for many years.
~ “From the point of view of a spiritual life, it is not what you do that matters most, but the way in which it is done and the consciousness you put into it. Remember always the Divine and all you do will be an expression of the Divine Presence. When all your actions are consecrated to the Divine there will be no longer activities that are superior and activities that are inferior; all will have an equal importance - the value given them by the consecration."
True knewledge is not attained by thinking,
It is what you are; it is what you become,
~ Sri Aurobindo
All life, according to Sri Aurobindo, is Yoga, whereas Yoga as a sadhana is a methodical effort toward self-perfection that brings to expression the latent, hidden potentialities of being. Success in this endeavor connects the human being to the universal and transcendental Existence.
Integral yoga, also known as supramental yoga, is Sri Aurobindo and The Mother's yoga-based philosophy and practice (Mirra Alfassa). The idea that Spirit manifests itself in a process of involution while forgetting its origins is central to Integral yoga. The reverse process of evolution is accelerating toward full manifestation of spirit.
At King's College in Cambridge, England, Aurobindo studied for the Indian Civil Service.
After returning to India, he worked in various civil service positions for the Maharaia of the Princely state of Baroda and became increasingly involved in nationalist politics through the Indian National Congress and the nascent revolutionary movement in Bengal through the Anushilan Samiti. In the aftermath of a number of bombings linked to his organization, he was arrested and charged with treason for Alipore Conspiracy in a public trial.
Sri Aurobindo, on the other hand, could only be convicted and imprisoned for writing articles opposing British colonial rule in India. Following the murder of a prosecution witness, Narendranath Goswami, during the trial, he was released when no evidence could be provided.
He had mystical and spiritual experiences while in prison, and after leaving politics for spiritual work, he moved to Pondicherry.
Sri Aurobindo developed a spiritual practice known as Integral Yoga in Pondicherry. The evolution of human life into divine life in divine body was the central theme of his vision.
He believed in a spiritual awakening that not only liberated but also transformed human nature, allowing for a divine life on Earth. Sri Aurobindo Ashram was established in 1926 with the assistance of his spiritual collaborator, Mirra Alfassa (referred to as "The Mother").
The Life Divine, which deals with the philosophical aspect of Integral Yoga, and Synthesis of Yoga, which deals with the principles and methods of Integral Yoga, are his main literary works.
